Partnering for our goal

Updated: Mar 4, 2020

Unlocking potential and transforming lives through our global network

In our first 10 years, we have positively impacted over one million lives by providing access to clean, reliable and affordable energy. We are hugely proud of this achievement and are thankful to the people and partners that have been integral in helping us to reach this milestone.

We exist to solve a major problem: energy poverty. Currently, over one billion people live with no access to energy. An additional billion people are connected to an unreliable grid. Our purpose is to expand energy access to unlock potential and transform lives. As we celebrate our 10th birthday and firmly set our sights on positively impacting more lives, our partners – whether heads of states or ambitious companies – are integral to this next chapter.

A partnerships approach is recognised by the United Nations as one of the building blocks to achieving sustainable development. Goal 17 of the UN’s #Envision2030 is Partnership for the Goals. In the face of global challenges, it celebrates the role of partnership in making a meaningful and long-lasting impact.

With a presence in 13 countries, we tirelessly work with governments and companies to help achieve national electrification targets and bring reliable, affordable and clean energy to communities – whether in rural areas or cities.

We further support governments through expanding access to data. Bboxx Pulse™, our comprehensive management platform, uses Internet of Things technology to remotely monitor our solar home systems. Bboxx Pulse™ enables us to collect over one billion data points each day. This data provides valuable insight into our customers’ usage, such as voltage, frequency and connectivity. By harnessing this data, we can predict market needs, provide enhanced service to our customers and work alongside heads of state to effectively scale our energy solutions to better reach communities.

Our private partnerships with companies large and small have enabled us to significantly develop our geographic reach and product offering. We have grown our partner network over the past 10 years – celebrating partnerships old and new. From our roots in the college dorms at Imperial College, through to strategic partnerships with global companies. We are proud to continue our multi-faceted collaboration with Imperial.

The biggest activity that we are currently a part of is the Resilient Electricity Networks for a productive Grid Architecture (RENGA) project. This seeks to improve how small-scale generation, mini-grids and a large national/regional electricity grid work together to accelerate access to electricity.

In 2018, we partnered with EDF, the world’s leading electricity company, in Togo to contribute to the Government’s electrification programme. Valerie Levkov, EDF’s Senior Vice-President in charge of Africa and Middle East stated: “By teaming up with Bboxx in Togo, the EDF Group has embarked on a new stage of development of its off-grid activities in Africa… We are proud to work with a partner like Bboxx, which shares our commitment to low carbon energies.”

In August last year, we completed a $50 million Series D fundraise which was led by Mitsubishi Corporation. The round involved investors spanning three continents, illustrating how the global community is embracing sustainability and working with us as a tool for development.

At Bboxx, partnership and collaboration run through the pillars of our business: we are one global team, pursuing one shared purpose. Looking ahead to the next 10 years, we look forward to forging partnerships, working with more people, and collectively turbocharging our mission.
